Amen! I have found that the 'bird' does incite near homicidal rage in some cars (one woman tried deliberately to kill me twice within one block last year) so I have taken to the overt hand gesture of throwing my hand very sassily to the side in a "What the F#*@!" type fashion. Makes me feel better & is stylish. I also take advantage of the traffic jam & upon catching an offending vehicle, I will ride purposefully in front of them. I consider it a teaching moment for this car & in the wise words of Laurie Notaro, an "opportunity to enlighten". and to make my bike rage subside - I just pedal faster and smile at the next car that is respectful of my space on the road.
Off to pedal to the store - happy biking!

There's nothing wrong, I think, with not resisting the urge to bird. Recall the myriad of moments throughout human history where such an urge, once met, began an avalanche of change that was long overdue and good for an enormous number of people.

Plus, blowing off steam keeps the heart healthy and the cancer away. :)
